20년이 훌쩍 넘은 시간 만에 한국의 봄을 보았어요.
어떻게 한국에 도착했는지…정신없이 갔고 엄마와의 준비되지 않은 이별의 시간 속에 장례기간을 보내고 나서 거리에 흐드러지게 만개한 벚꽃들에 그제야 아~ 하고 소리가 나오더라고요. 너무도 아름다웠습니다. 홈페이지를 개설하고 부지런히 저의 이야기를 올리겠다는 약속은 쉽지 않더라고요. 지난가을 한국에 다녀온 스토리가 마지막 블로그에 있네요. 그리고 다시 한국의 이야기로 돌아왔어요.


반백살이 넘었어도 늘 막내 마음이라 엄마가 이렇게 갑자기 곁을 떠날거라고 생각하지 못했어요. 충분한 이별 준비 없이 엄마를 보내며 이 나이에 인제야 어른이 되기 시작했어요… 요리를 하면서 어린 시절 부엌에 있던 엄마 모습을 지켜보는 것만으로 그냥 옆에서 조잘거리며 주워들었던 기억의 조각들이 저의 일과 순간순간에 함께해요. 일하는 엄마가 집으로 돌아와 식구들 먹거리를 미리 쟁이려 부엌에서 일하는 모습이 어린 딸의 눈에는 무척이나 힘들게 보였어요. 그래서 옆에서 더 열심히 조잘 거리고 한번 맛볼라치면 한껏 과장하여 너무 맛있다고 호들갑을 떨었던 것 같아요. 알아요..그 힘듦이 무엇인지….우리 서로…

엄마는 제가 요리선생님을 하겠다고 했을 때 정색을 하시며 싫어하셨고, 철없는 저는 왜 내가 이렇게 좋아하는 일을 하게 되었는데.. 모든 사람이 격려해주고 칭찬해주는데 가장 인정받고 싶은 우리 엄마는 자랑스러워 해 주지 않을까… 한동안 그 마음이 너무 서운해서 어느 날 엄마 아빠에게 이 서운한 마음을 장문의 편지로 남겼어요… 그 이후로 엄마 아빠는 겉으로는 내색을 자제하셨고, 몸 챙겨라, 조금씩만 해라…이렇게만 말씀하셨어요. 작년에 요양원에 엄마를 만나러 갔을 때 어느덧 말씀이 조금 힘들어지셨던 엄마가 제게 물었어요.
“아직도 요리 가르치는 게 좋아?”….
사실 깜짝 놀랐어요. 아직도 엄마는 생각하고 계시는구나.. “응 엄마, 몸이 힘들기도 하지만 너무 나의 일이 좋아”라고 했지요. 엄마가 돌아가시고 엄마 유품을 정리하다가 제가 쓴 그때 그 편지를 발견했어요…
그 편지를 누가 볼까…얼른 챙기고 집으로 돌아오는 비행기 안에서 다시 읽었어요.. 글에는 진심이 가득했지만, 철없이 엄마의 걱정하는 마음을 외면하는 막내딸의 글이더라고요. 엄마는 그저 한 가지만 걱정하셨구나.. 본인의 소중한 딸이 고생하지 않았으면 하는 그마음… 그 마음을 알면서도 좀 더 다른 방법으로 엄마를 안심시켜 드릴껄..


이십 몇 년 만에 마주한 2025년도의 한국의 봄은 너무 슬프고도 아름답게 추억으로 남았습니다. 싱가폴로 돌아와 바로 수업을 해야 나약해지는 마음을 잡을 것 같아 미뤄두었던 수업을 시작했어요. 첫 수업에 아침부터 울렁거리는 마음을 단단하게 다잡고 학생들을 맞이하려 여러 번 거울을 보았어요. 저만 단단하게 마음먹은들 뭐해요;;; 문열고 들어오시는 분들은 이미 눈시울 빨개져 안아주시고 놓아주지 않으시는걸요… 시작부터 감정이 터지면 수업을 망칠 것 같아 때론 “ 제발 아무 말 말아요” 라고 애원까지..^^ 정말 너무 따뜻하고 위로받는 시간이었어요. 바쁘면 슬픔을 잊을 것 같아 수업을 바로 시작했지만, 그것보다 너무 많은 분이 정말 따뜻하게 위로해주시고 나눠주시고 같이 울어주셔서 전 한결 마음을 추스른 것 같아요..…
잊지 못할 또 한 번의 경험을 했습니다. 제가 무슨 복으로 이렇게 좋은 분들을 많이 만나게 되고 빈 곳을 채울 수 있을까… 감동과 감사함이 충만했습니다.


이런 저를 지켜보며 엄마도 조금이나마 걱정을 덜고 자랑스러워 해주고 계시겠지요?
